Update
New Texoma Record Catfish

January 18, 2004
Water pool level: 611.35, normal annual pool level is 617 feet.
Water temperature: 49 degrees.  Water clarity: clear.
Generating Schedule: No generation on Sunday.

This morning was cold with an overnight low of 38. Sunrise was 7:30 AM and sunset was 5:43 PM.  The high today was 45.  Winds were out of the north at 17 to 21 mph.  Monday thru Wednesday will be partly cloudy with cool temperatures. Thursday thru the weekend the temperatures will warm to the upper 50s

On Friday, January 16, a 121.5 pound blue catfish was landed by Cody Mullennix, a 27 year old Howe, Texas angler. fishing from the Texas shoreline in Hagerman Wildlife Refuge on Lake Texoma. The 60” blue cat was landed on a 14’ Shakespeare rod coupled with a Jarvis Walker reel spooled with 20 pound test Offshore Angler Tightline monofilament.

Mullennix’s 20 minute battle produced not only an apparent overall Texas state record for the species, but also a possible International Game Fish Association (IGFA) line class world record.  It appears that the catfish is the largest blue cat ever landed anywhere in the world on rod and reel.  The big cat was caught on an 8/0 Gamakatsu circle hook with a 3” dead gizzard shad.

A crew from the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center in Athens, Texas showed up later Friday night to transport the fish back to the TPWD facility where it will be put on display at the TFFC’s popular aquarium in Athens, Texas.

Saturday evening TFFC reported the fish was still alive and doing ok and they thought it would make it.

The rumor around the lake late Sunday afternoon was that Sea World has offered Mullennix quite a chunk of change for the live catfish.

They weren’t world records, but Jeff Stevens, Craig Dennis, Brian Turner and Todd Treat from Landrover Tulsa, Oklahoma caught 52 blues and 3 channel catfish fishing with guide Mike Blakely Sunday afternoon.  These were not put on display.  The guys carried home four big bags of fillets.  They will be able to feed delicious Texoma catfish to several people.

Steve Hilliard, Sr. and Steve Jr. from Lewisville, Texas and Billy Truesdell from Pottsboro, Texas had a great fishing trip Saturday with guide Roger Hill.  They brought a limit of nice stripers to the cleaning table.

Vurlin and Tammi Crawford fished Saturday with guide David Escamilla.  After Tammi got a little cold and came back to her room Vurlin and David returned to the lake to catch a limit of stripers.

Guide John Harris and the Jeff Ostmeyer party of four from Oklahoma City braved the cold, sleet and high winds to land several large stripers Sunday afternoon.

Our anglers are still landing more and more double digit stripers. Afternoon fishing has been super for both striper and catfish. Many of our anglers prefer afternoons when the temperature is much warmer than early in the morning.

This time of the year remember to always wear layers of clothing, insulated boots and have wet weather gear available in case of showers.   If the wind is high, a hooded rain suit makes a great wind barrier.  Don’t let the cold weather keep you off the lake.  When you are catching fish at this time of the year, you will never notice the weather.
