Fishing Report

Texoma Fall Fishing is Awesome

Tuesday, October 13, 2003

Water pool level: 613.65, normal annual pool level is 617 feet.

Water temperature: 73 degrees.  Water clarity: clear.

Generating Schedule: two units 3 PM to 6 PM.

Today was nice with the low this morning 64 degrees and a light north wind. The high yesterday was only 82 degrees.  The extended forecast for the coming week is for lows in the 50s and highs in the 70s. There is a slight chance of showers Thursday night with high winds.  Sunrise was 7:29 AM and Sunset was 6:59 PM.

Striper and catfish fishing is great at this time. Live shad in thirty-five to forty-five feet of water is working the best to catch a limit of stripers.  Our anglers are landing more and more twenty inch plus stripers every day.  Limits of catfish are being caught on Danny King’s Punch Bait on twenty-five feet deep humps surrounded by deeper water.  The catfish are running from fourteen to twenty-four inches long.  This is the ideal size for frying, baking or grilling.

Fishing for catfish is quite different from striper fishing.  Find you a shallow hump in deep water or get right off a deep point where there is very little boat traffic.  Anchor both ends of your boat so you won’t drift around.  Cast your bait (cut shad, chicken livers or prepared punch bait) towards the sides of the hump or point and fish on the bottom.  Also, put you a few baits straight down fishing only a few inches from the bottom.  Around dark you need to come up a few feet from the bottom.  The cats usually start feeding closer to the surface after dark.  Sometimes they even bust the surface after dark.  I have used a lighted bobber with the bait only about twelve inches under the bobber and caught some large catfish.

Afternoon and night fishing has been super for both striper and catfish.  Many of our anglers prefer afternoons when the temperature is much more pleasant than early in the morning.

I carried out two fishermen twice this week in the afternoon and both caught plenty of channel and blue catfish.  I filleted the larger ones and skinned the smaller ones and left them whole. They said they were delicious.

Saturday afternoon the Terry Barrow party of six went out at 3:00 PM with guide Roger Hill.  They returned to the dock at dark with a limit of very nice stripers.

Sunday morning guide Mark Banister, Jr. took six fishermen for an early morning fishing adventure. Debbie & Mark Givins, Chris Kohotek, Cheryl Wieden, Donal Duivbarr and Brooklynn Gash kept Mark very busy while they caught their limit of 60 stripers.

Monday morning guide Roger Hill left the dock at 7:00 AM with Michael Sage and his son Alex. Using live shad they caught a limit of stripers with all of their twenty inch plus fish and a one and a half pound catfish.

Ricky Van Huss and his son Curtis enjoyed afternoon fishing with guide Roger Hill.  Their trip started at 3:00 PM and they returned to the dock around dark with a limit of stripers and one three pound catfish.  They also had their twenty inch plus stripers. Ricky reported happily that they caught and released several stripers.
