Lake Texoma Pre-Spawn Fishing Report Thursday, April 2, 2003 Water pool level: 614.63, normal annual pool level is 617 feet. Water temperature: 52 degrees. Water clarity: very clear. Generating from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM Today was partly cloudy with a strong southwest wind. March precipitation was .92 inches. The extended forecast is for lows in the 60s and highs in the 70s. There is a 20% chance of thunderstorms Thursday night, Saturday and Sunday. Spring has sprung and the March wind in April is giving the fishermen problems. Most anglers are having a hard time catching stripers on live shad at this time. Sassy Shad, Storm’s Wild Eye Swim Baits, Coho Minnows and Ghost Minnow Slabs are all catching 14” to 19‘ stripers. Limits of this size fish are coming easily in the back of marinas and on the flats just off the river channels. Find a school of shad and fish your lure under the shad as close to the bottom as possible without hanging up. When using the Ghost Minnow Slab, drop it to the bottom and barely twitch the end of your rod tip. The larger 20” plus fish are hard to find. Load the family up and bring your boat to Lake Texoma for some very fun days chasing the elusive silversides. Make your plans early and enjoy the upcoming excellent spring fishing. One of the best ways to catch fish is to go with a professional guide. These experienced fishermen have modern and safe striper boats with the latest electronics, bait tanks and fishing equipment. They fish nearly every day so they know what lures are working and how to catch fresh shad for bait each day. The experienced guide will keep up with where the stripers are schooling and teach you how to catch fish. Warming water temperatures are getting the stripers excited. They are being caught in water two feet deep to 30 feet deep. Most of the larger stripers are staging in the upper rivers. When western Oklahoma and the panhandle of Texas get a heavy rain we will have an early spawn in April. As all of you know, when the silversides come back from spawning their bellies are empty and they are very hungry. Jigs, slabs, live shad and cut bait will all catch you a nice striper. Largemouth bass are fair to good up to 4 pounds. They are hitting crankbaits, Rouges, Flukes and soft plastics. This is the time of the year to try your favorite spinnerbait in shallow water. Check out your boat and fishing gear and get on the water. Spring is almost here and bass fishing should only get better. Nice stringers of crappie are being reported caught around placed brush near boathouses and along the creek banks.
